The Marathi language has had a long journey as it has gone through many dialects until today. While there are more than one thousand of languages spoken across India, the Marathi language has a distinct character. The language is popular for its use of words like "Kya". A Marathi word for a person would be "Ka", and the use of "Kya" instead of "Kha" makes the latter word sound like a word for an object. "Kya" means a person, a friend, child, white/dark, etc. These kind of words would have been either not heard at all or not heard at all in English, because the equivalent word is "Yeah". Marathi is also the most northern language of India. It is spoken in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, as well as parts of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Other parts of India that are inhabited by Marathi speakers are the Konkan, Goa, and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telengana. Marathi is also spoken by large communities in India where it is not the primary language. Owing to its proximity to the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Goa, Marathi is known as a dialect of Karnati. Yet another dialect that continues to exist is that of the Adi community of Maharashtra which is colloquial in nature.
