Citation: Coccolithus miopelagicus Bukry, 1971Rank: SpeciesVariants: Coccolithus pliopelagicus sensu Boesiger et al. (2017) = small Coccolithus cf. miopelagicus. Smaller specimens, ca 11-13µm, with broad rims go extinct at about the same level as C. miopelagicus. Boesiger et al. (2017) record these as C. pliopelagicus Wise 1973, however the holotype of C. pliopelagicus was from the late Pliocene. For biostratigraphic rigour it is best to adopt a definition of >14µm for C. miopelagicus, but these smaller speciemns were most likely members of the same biological species.Taxonomic discussion: Central area is smaller relative to coccolith size than in typical C. pelagicus (see original description and comments). 59ce067264
